Education For All
From 2003-2007, Nutricare International ltd, an indigenous Ugandan Organisation work with the communities of Arua started a nutrition and HIV/AIDS sensitisation programme in Fundo Village in Rigbo Sub-county, Ma'di Okollo County, Arua District. This programme was very successful in a number of ways.
- They were able to transport children and families with malnourished children to Arua and Kuluva Hospital with the help of a Germany organisation that was working in Arua. More than 36 children received medical care and their health was restored.
- This project also gave birth to the registration of a community school (Fundo Parents' Primary School) with Arua District Education Office. Since 2003 up to now, the children who come to this school study under nearby trees. This is due to lack of Educational infrastructure and because the nearby schools are still too far for the children to walk 4 miles away or walk across a swamp.
- At least, 90% of the community is aware of the dangers of HIV/AIDS. The rate of immorality among teenagers has reduce, early marriages and teenage pregnancies have reduce. However, more needs to be done in these areas.
- The community is aware of malaria which has been killing most of the children and now they can quickly seek medical help compared to their earlier practice of going to traditional healers or “witch craft” that never had medicines for Malaria. However, the nearest health centre is still too far from them (15km) and the main Hospital is 89 km away (Arua Referral Hospital). This still makes it difficult for help during emergencies.
SOLUTION:- The community cam up with plans to build and establish a primary school (Fundo Parents' Primary School).
- This school premise will be used also for Mobile Clinic Services until a health centre is built and running in the area. The plan now is to establish an Out Patient Health Unit in the area.
- NCI.Uganda may get involved in most of these activities through creating awareness and fund-raising.
